Academic Integrity-Raising an Ethical Student will be the topic of the first Parent to Parent Series sponsored by the Hillview PTO on Tuesday, November 2, 6:45-8:30 p.m. in the library. Steve Johnson, Director of Character Education Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University, will speak on the hot topic of cheating in school. He will also give practical tools for meeting the challenges of successful parenting, and offer strategies for fostering the moral development of children.

This Thursday, in Character Ed, we will be continuing our discussion of Relational Aggression and the shifting tides of adolescent friendships. Read this Character Ed lesson, and take some time on Thursday night to talk to your children about any experiences you might have had ending a friendship or breaking up with a boyfriend or girlfriend.

In her book, Queen Bees and Wannabes, Rosalind Wiseman says that "the best-friend relationships girls have in early adolescence can be the most intense relationsips girls will ever have....." and then in the next paragraph, "It's almost certain that they'll break up around seventh grade (if not before) when at least one will want to expand her social horizons."

This book is an excellent resource for parents trying to help their daughters navigate a slippery social slope! (Boys, too, have told me that this issue is one with which that they've grappled, as well.)

Last week students brought home an envelope designed for recycling used inkjet cartridges and instructions on how to do so. This initial envelope can also be used to recycle old cell phones. Proceeds from recyclable inkjet cartridges benefit the Hillview PTO. More envelopes are available from a dispenser in the office and should be used for cartridges only.

For information on cell phone recycling and other recycling tips, visit the Recycling Guide on the PTO website. For more information, contact Catherine McMillan at gregandcat@aol.com.

The Homework Club bus for Tinsley families is now available on Mondays and Wednesdays. Letters were sent home with stops, times, and permission slips. We are excited to offer this great opportunity to our students.
