How to Sign-up:
Visit www.hillviewpto.org/member/conference.html after 3:30 p.m. on Monday, October 9. Username: hillviewparent; password: hawks
Complete the entire form and remember to submit at least three (3) time requests. Many parents are requesting the same times as you. Time requests are filled in the order they are received.
You may wish to also schedule a conference with your child's other (e.g., math, science, etc.) teachers.
You will receive an email either confirming your time or asking for a different time.
If you need to make changes after an appointment has been confirmed, please email
conference@hillviewpto.org with the teacher's name, the original conference date and time, and the date and time you would like to change it to. You will receive an email to confirm the change.
Students should attend all conferences. All other students must leave campus unless they have "official" school business, such as after school sports practices.

Attention Parents of 7th and 8th Graders! Parent volunteers are needed to help out with Community Service Projects. This is a chance to work directly with students doing some wonderful work for our community and the world. Last year over 250 Hillview students got involved and accomplished some GREAT things.

Come find out how you can be a part of one of these projects by attending a parent volunteer meeting on Wednesday, October 18, at 10:45 a.m. in the Hillview Library. Please RSVP to Debbie Devoto at ddevoto@mpcsd.org.

High School Information Nights and Shadowing Programs for interested 8th grade students will occur as follows:

Sequoia High School District Information Night: Tuesday, October 10, 7 - 9 p.m. Carrington Hall on the Sequoia High School campus, 1201 Brewster Ave, RWC. For more information contact Susan Berghouse at sberghou@seq.org or 369-1411, ext. 2210.

St. Andrew's School Information Fair: Tuesday, October 17, 6:30 p.m., St. Andrew's Hall, 13601 Saratoga Ave, Saratoga. Many local independent and parochial schools will have representatives present. For more information contact Richard Hof, Assistant Head of School, at (408) 867-3785.

St. Francis High School: Prospective families need to register online at http://www.sfhs.com/shadow/index.php. Phone and email registrations will not be accepted. Contact Holly Elkins, Assistant Director of Admissions, at 968-1213, ext. 222 for questions.

Mandatory Boys Basketball Tournament Team tryouts will be held on Monday, October 16 and Wednesday, October 18 from 5:45-7:15 p.m. in the gym.

Mandatory Girls Basketball Tournament Team tryouts will be held on Tuesday, October 17 from 5:15-6:45 p.m. and Thursday, October 19 from 6:15-7:45 p.m. in the gym.

There will be a mandatory parent meeting on Monday, October 16 at 5:30 p.m. and Tuesday, October 17 at 5:00 p.m. in Rm M3 next to the gym. Parents must attend one of these meetings on either date.

On Thursday, October 12, students will bring home an envelope designed for recycling used inkjet cartridges and instructions on how to do so. The initial envelope can also be used to recycle old cell phones. Proceeds from recyclable inkjet cartridges benefit the Hillview PTO. More envelopes are available from a dispenser in the office and should be used for cartridges only.

10th Annual Math Day is Friday, October 13. The Math Department was overwhelmed with volunteers, so we apologize if you were not called to help out this year. Please feel free to stop by the blacktop anytime during the day to check out the wonderful activities.

Student Activities Magazine Drive will kickoff on Thursday, October 19 with an assembly during school. This is the most important Student Activities fundraiser of the year for Hillview students. The money raised from this drive helps support the Student Activities programs, such as Action Team Thursdays, Friday Noon Events, Assemblies, Action Afternoon, Raging Waters, as well as the various field trips taken by each class throughout the year. Please support the Student Activities programs by renewing all of your magazine subscriptions through Hillview!

Math Team Club: It's not too late to join this club every Monday during lunch in Mr. Doroquez's classroom, 28. During the club, we will be applying and learning problem solving skills and forming a math team to compete against other schools. Some of the competitions will include the AMC 8, MathCounts, and the Math League.

Library News:
    Book Club: Sign up in the library if you plan to join us on Wednesday, October 25th to discuss "The Water Mirror" by Kai Meyer. Return books as soon as you are finished so the next person can read it!
    Books Come Alive, Halloween 2006: Dress up like a character from a book to win a prize from the library and be eligible for the “Literary” category in the school-wide costume contest. See the library posters for ideas!

With over 220 students participating in the annual Gift Wrap Fundraiser, Hillview sold $25,000 worth of Sally Foster products, raising $12,500 for the Hillview PTO.

Locker Room Etiquette Parents, please remind your children to pick up their personal items and store them in their lockers.
PE Uniforms should be laundered each week. Backordered uniforms: Have your child see Ms. Becky Galvez in the girl's locker room.
Deodorant - We request students bring roll-on deodorant rather than aerosol spray.
Current units: Team Handball, Soccer, Station-to-Station Activities, & La La Crosse.

Hillview Fencing: Raise your blades with Coach George Pogosov from Cardinal Fencing at Stanford. Six consecutive classes on Friday afternoons in the Hillview gym beginning October 13th from 3:20 to 4:30 p.m. Fill out the Fencing Registration Form & Permission slip, include the fee (payable to Hillview PTO) and drop into the Fencing Box in the Hillview office or bring it to the first class with long pants and sports shoes on! On Thursday, October 12, from 6:30-7:30 p.m., retired Laurel teachers, Mrs. Conn, Mrs. Wong and Mrs. Jacobson return to the Laurel Library as part of the Pajama Party Storyteller event at the L/E Book Fair. Book Fair hours are October 9-13, Monday- Wednesday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Thursday-Friday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Laurel School.

League of Women Voters will sponsor a forum for the Menlo Park City School Board candidates on Wednesday, October 18 at 7:00 p.m. in the Encinal School Library, 195 Encinal Avenue, Atherton.

M-A Parent Education Night - Tuesday, October 24, 7:00-8:30 p.m. Dr. Mark Rosekind, Sleep Research Specialist at Stanford University, will discuss adolescent sleep needs. Contact Julie Brody or Pam Stoner for more information.
